When an autism assessment may be helpful

Families may seek assessment when there are persistent questions about social communication, behavioural flexibility, sensory processing, developmental differences or the child’s ability to manage daily demands.

Social communication

Differences in reciprocal conversation, nonverbal communication, peer relationships, sharing interests or understanding social expectations.

Restricted or repetitive patterns

Strong routines, focused interests, repetitive behaviours, distress with change or highly specific preferences.

Sensory & adaptive functioning

Sensitivity to sound, light, texture or other sensory input, alongside challenges with independence, transitions or daily routines.

What a comprehensive child autism assessment can include

The exact process depends on the child’s age and referral question. Assessment may include caregiver interview, developmental history, behavioural observation, standardized autism measures, adaptive-functioning measures, cognitive testing and review of school or medical information.

Developmental history

Early milestones, language development, social behaviour, play, routines and previous concerns are reviewed carefully.

Direct assessment

Structured or semi-structured assessment activities may be used to examine communication, social reciprocity and behavioural patterns.

Differential diagnosis

ADHD, language disorders, anxiety, intellectual disability, learning concerns and other conditions may overlap with autism features and should be considered where relevant.

Autism assessment should not rely on one checklist alone. Diagnosis is based on integrated evidence across development, behaviour, functioning and standardized assessment data.

Results, feedback and practical recommendations

Where appropriate, families receive a written report summarizing history, assessment findings, diagnostic conclusions and individualized recommendations. Recommendations may address school supports, communication, behaviour, sensory needs, daily routines and further services.

Frequently asked questions

Can ADHD and autism occur together?

Yes. ADHD and autism can co-occur. A comprehensive assessment considers overlapping and co-occurring concerns rather than assuming one diagnosis explains everything.

Does an autism assessment always include cognitive testing?

No. Cognitive testing may be useful in some cases, but the exact battery depends on age, referral question and clinical needs.

Will the assessment include school recommendations?

When appropriate, the report can include individualized recommendations for school, home and community support.
