Who Is a Candidate for rTMS in Calgary?

Suitability is determined through individualized clinical and safety screening—not by a symptom checklist alone. This guide explains common considerations before EXOMIND™ rTMS treatment.

Clinician-guided care with screening before treatment

The quick answer

Someone may be considered for rTMS when their symptoms, treatment history, goals and medical profile support a non-invasive brain-stimulation option. A consultation is needed to clarify the diagnosis or treatment target, review prior care and identify contraindications or precautions.

Important: Being interested in rTMS does not automatically mean it is appropriate. Recommendations are made only after an individualized review.

When an rTMS consultation may be worth considering

Symptoms have persisted

Depression or another clinically relevant concern has not improved enough with prior evidence-based care.

A non-invasive option is being explored

The person wants to discuss a treatment that does not require anesthesia and can be integrated with broader mental-health care.

There is a clear treatment goal

The consultation can connect symptoms and functional goals to an appropriate clinical pathway and realistic outcome monitoring.

What safety screening reviews

  • Current symptoms, diagnosis and functional impact
  • Past and current treatments, medications and response
  • Seizure history and other neurological or medical factors
  • Metallic or electronic implants, especially near the head
  • Pregnancy, postpartum needs and other relevant health changes
  • Sleep, substance use and factors that may change seizure risk
  • Ability to attend the recommended schedule and give informed consent

When extra caution or medical clearance may be needed

Examples can include certain implants or metal near the head, a seizure history or elevated seizure risk, unstable medical or neurological concerns, or another factor identified by the clinician. The details matter, so do not rely on a general web list to decide on your own.

What happens before treatment starts

1. Clinical consultation

Your concerns, goals and treatment history are reviewed.

2. Safety and suitability review

Contraindications, precautions and any need for medical coordination are assessed.

3. Individualized plan

If appropriate, the team explains the proposed pathway, expected commitments and how progress will be monitored.

Common questions

Is rTMS suitable for everyone?

No. Suitability depends on the clinical target, history, safety factors and clinician judgment.

Can rTMS be combined with psychotherapy or medication?

It may be integrated with other care when clinically appropriate. Coordination should be individualized and medication changes must be handled by the prescribing professional.

Does a consultation guarantee treatment?

No. The purpose of screening is to determine whether rTMS is appropriate and to discuss alternatives when it is not.
