What an ADHD assessment evaluates
A comprehensive ADHD assessment examines whether symptoms began during development, occur across relevant settings, create meaningful impairment and are not better explained by another condition. It should consider sleep, anxiety, depression, trauma, learning problems, autism, substance use, medical conditions and other contributors.
No single questionnaire, computerized task or brain map can independently diagnose ADHD. Canadian guidance emphasizes clinical history, impairment, differential diagnosis and appropriate collateral information.
What a psychoeducational assessment evaluates
A psychoeducational assessment typically examines cognitive abilities and academic achievement in reading, writing and mathematics. Additional attention, executive-function, memory, emotional or behavioural measures may be added according to the referral question.
The Canadian Paediatric Society notes that specific learning disorder is usually diagnosed by a psychologist through psychoeducational assessment using history, records and standardized testing.
When both assessments may be needed
ADHD and learning disorders can coexist. A student may understand concepts but struggle with decoding, spelling or math facts. Another student may possess adequate academic skills but have difficulty completing work because of attention and organization. Some people have both patterns.
A combined evaluation can prevent one explanation from overshadowing another. The battery should still be individualized rather than automatically administering every available test.
Which assessment supports accommodations?
Both can support recommendations when the findings demonstrate functional limitations. The type of documentation required depends on the school, post-secondary institution, employer, licensing body or funding program. Alberta Student Aid, for example, specifies documentation requirements for disability-related supports and learning-disability assessment reports.
